“It’s not what you say, it’s the way you say it!”
If I had a quid for every time I’d heard that, I’d be a rich, rich man. Trouble is, it’s not exactly accurate is it? And that’s where Totes Quotes comes in. The finest film quotes transcend the performance from whence they came and have the ability to infiltrate popular culture and consciousness.
From the endlessly quotable to the words you wish you’d said yourself, each week will feature an iconic iteration. So in the words of Reservoir Dogs’ Joe Cabot…”Let’s go to work!”
There’s plenty that’s quotable (but not necessarily repeatable) from Shane Meadows’ 2004 revenge thriller Dead Man’s Shoes. It turns out you have an abundance of things to say when you return from the army to find out that your disabled brother’s been bullied to the point of suicide by a bunch of Droogs.
But the exchange most-mimicked has to be bully and wannabe bad-man Sonny’s (Gary Stretch) first meeting with actual ex-army bad man Richard (Paddy Considine). He’s not happy.
Sonny: You’re not afraid of me are ya?
[Richard smiles & shakes head]
S: You’re making me very nervous, Richard.
Richard: Well you should be. If I were you, I’d get in that fuckin’ car and I’d get out of here man. I’d gather them goonies and get whatever you’ve got comin’ mate… ’cause I’m gonna fucking hit you all.
S: I don’t like being threatened, Rich.
R: I’m not threatening you mate. It’s beyond fucking words. I watched over you when you were asleep and I looked at your fucking neck and I was that far away from slicing it.
R: [Richard opens up his right hand and points into his palm] You’re fucking there mate! [He clenches his hand]
R: So get in that car… and FUCK OFF!
R: You get to me first!
S: I just might.
He won’t. Which quote makes you want to go all out on a vengeance spree? With or without your ghost brother? Let us know in the comments below.
