“It’s not what you say, it’s the way you say it!” If I had a shiny new pound coin for every time I’d heard that, I’d be a rich, rich man. Trouble is, it’s not exactly accurate is it? Great dialogue transcends both the performance and the film from whence it came and has the ability to infiltrate popular culture and consciousness. From the endlessly quotable to the words you wish you’d said yourself, each week will feature an iconic iteration. So in the words of Reservoir Dogs’ Joe Cabot…”Let’s go to work…”
For a series that famously had Harrison Ford spouting “you can type this shit, but you sure as hell can’t say it!” in the general direction of George Lucas, the Star Wars saga has more than its fair share of classic colloquy!
From Darth Vader’s commonly misquoted “No, I am your father,” Han Solo’s pitch-perfect “I know/I love you” retort and, of course “may the Force be with you” itself, these lines have transcended the films, permeating popular culture and our consciousness.
But it isn’t just these monolithic monologues that live on, the more incidental dialogue keeps cropping up in the everyday. C-3PO’s (or is it Jar Jar’s?) “How rude!” still gets dropped whenever we’re only slight put out. It’s considered a badge of honor to be described as a “nerfherder” and even the Battle Droids from The Phantom Menace’ with their once-annoying “Roger, Roger!” have worked their way into the lexicon. Mainly when you’re being passive aggressive, but still.
Admiral Ackbar’s “It’s a trap!” has helped pun-loving coffee shop owners sell frappe’s for years and any silly old bobbins sounds like sage advice, if said out of order and in a Yoda voice. Hmm? Gold Leader’s “almost there” has come to represent everything from a toilet trip to signalling your imminent arrival and we’re still trying to work out how many parsecs it is up to the Sainsbury’s Local and back.
Just don’t mention sand getting anywhere!
